Pig-tail Hour Will Kick Off Pig-Filled Charity Meal on April 1st
If you’re pro-pig like me (virtually worshiping bacon in anything) and increasingly appreciative of beer pairings (beer is the new wine?), then the Pig & Beer charity dinner set for April 1st at Urbano Pizza Bar in DTLA may be for you.
This will be the inaugural event for a new dinner series called “Cooking with Friends” by Chefs Bruce Kalman (Urbano Pizza Bar) and Gavin Mills (Wood + Vine). It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of Chef Bruce and love his focus on fresh, local ingredients at Urbano so I’m super excited about the event.
Tickets are $50 and all proceeds benefit Alex’s Lemonade, a foundation for childhood cancer. For those who don’t know, this charity was started by Alexandra “Alex” Scott in 2000. Just four years old and battling neuroblastoma at the time, she asked her parents if she could have a lemonade stand in front of their house. She then surprised everyone by announcing her plan to donate the money from the stand to her hospital to help the doctors find a cure for all kids with cancer. Thus begin an organization which has now raised over $50 million for childhood cancer research! Hard not to want to support that.
Pig & Beer will kick off with a “PIG-tail” hour at 4pm, followed by a multi-course pork-filled dinner at 5pm. The pig is free-range and acorn-fed from ReRide Ranch. See how Chef Bruce visited the ReRide Ranch to select the pig … in the rain:
Complementing the pork-filled fare will be the freshest produce around from top quality farms such as Coleman Family Farm and Weiser Family Farms (both who sell their products at the Santa Monica Farmers Market).
Meantime, pig party goers will be in the best beer hands around LA as The Beer Chicks (Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune) will be there to pair beverages. I’ve seen them in action many times, including last year at Viceroy Santa Monica’s Oktoberfest with Chris Crary. Those girls really know their beer and how to pair it with virtually any type of food. I have no doubt they’ll be on top of their game for this pork party based on how they expertly paired beverages at the Oktoberfest:
Seating’s limited so it’s best to make your reservation soon by emailing: UrbanoPizzaBar@gmail.com or by calling Urbano’s General Manager, Jonny Valenti, at 213-614-1900. Great chefs, pork and beer … all for a great cause? Sounds like a no lose proposition to me!
